The Civil Rights Music Movement

The Challenges

Music and typography can both express rhythm, culture, a sense of people, and place. How can this intersection move an audience to action? The challenge of this project was to find a genre, song, or musical movement that best represents a cause, and use typography to bring it to life. The project required a typography-led, integrated graphic design campaign that used Google Fonts to create a poster, a digital element and at least one other product.

The Solution

Civil Rights Music Movement in the 1960s is one of the strongest movements in the history of US music. I wanted to use the powerful impact of this music movement to send a message about current events and bring awareness to audiences about the history of African Americans and race-discrimination.

Concept

I chose Monserrat as the poject’s typeface, since this typeface brought a significant sense of propaganda. The color scheme includes the colors that are representative of African American culture. The project was designed based on the context of 1960s, but still retains a contemporary look.
